Social Media Manager

Earthjustice is seeking a Social Media Manager to join its Communications team. This position is responsible for leading the organization’s social media (SM) efforts and managing the social media team. Major responsibilities include developing overarching SM strategies to support the goals of Communications and other departments; managing key SM accounts from 9am-12pm EST, including content development, posting, monitoring, and engaging with supporters and influencers; rapid response coordination and calendaring between Advocacy Communications and social media staff; management of two social media specialists; building SM partnerships with organizations and influencers; identifying and evaluating new SM platforms and tracking tools to grow our supporter base and measure success metrics.

Earthjustice has built a strong presence on various social media strategies over the past few years. We are currently active on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and use these platforms to engage with our supporters, strengthen partnerships with other organizations, and promote content from our website and blog and media highlights. With the November 2016 election and Earthjustice’s growing visibility as an organization, our social media staffing and strategy needs have grown. We also need additional staffing coverage for the East Coast time zone (all social media staff are currently located in San Francisco at Earthjustice headquarters).

The preferred location is Washington, DC. SF candidates will also be considered.

Responsibilities:


Development of Social Media Strategies (35%)

  • Develop overarching SM strategic plan to grow our list, support litigation and policy work, increase brand awareness and deepen constituent engagement; work closely with social media specialists to develop platform specific action plans for Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
  • Partner with Advocacy Communications managers to develop long-term SM strategies for major legal campaigns; partner with DC-based policy and communications staff to develop SM strategies for major Hill-based policy initiatives; work with marketing and digital teams for similar initiatives on brand building, list growth and fundraising through SM channels;
  • Participate in rapid response meetings on breaking issues; coordinate SM calendaring with SM specialists and oversee message and content development on SM channels
  • Work with relevant Communications staff to develop bilingual social media outreach strategies as well as efforts to engage with diverse audiences on SM
  • Develop social media partnerships with organizations, like-minded businesses, and influencers; explore pathways for cross-promotion
  • Manage overall social media budget; work with SM specialists to determine specific budgetary spending
  • Work with Graphic Designer to develop overall visual brand on SM channels, including branded templates for content
  • Draft best practices guidelines and train new staff on using various SM accounts; oversee SM presence on intranet and all internal communications with staff regarding social media strategies and initiatives

Management of Social Media Accounts (35%)

  • Manage all Earthjustice SM accounts from 9am-12pm ET; create and post content; monitor SM feeds; engage with influencers and supporters as needed
  • Utilize various promotional strategies (including customization, cross promotions, paid advertising) to amplify social reach
  • Serve as emergency on-call contact afterhours and on weekends in case of rapid response needs

Management of Social Media Staff (20%)

  • Manage two social media specialists based in San Francisco; lead remote team meetings; conduct performance reviews; approve timecards and invoices; foster professional growth
  • Manage SM contractors, designers; evaluate and maintain database of freelancers
  • Domestic travel periodically (3-4 times a year) for team retreats and meetings; evaluate conferences and trainings for staff development

Evaluation and Metrics (10%)

  • Work with SM specialists to set goals, track key performance metrics
  • Evaluate new social media platforms and data management tools; negotiate contracts with vendors and contractors
  • Stay informed of latest social media trends and share knowledge with wider Communications team

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree with a major communications, design, computer science, marketing, political science, or environmental studies preferred.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience directly managing organizational social media accounts and developing strategies.
  • In-depth experience managing organizational social media accounts, especially Facebook and Twitter. Strong familiarity with other SM platforms, such as Instagram and Snapchat.
  • Solid experience setting high-level SM strategies and managing campaigns, work flows, calendars and budgets; experience with Hill-based SM campaigns and policymakers greatly desired.
  • Proven ability to handle rapid-response situations; ability to quickly turn around clear, concise social media messaging across a variety of platforms.
  • Expansive knowledge of SM tracking tools and promotional strategies; demonstrated ability to understand, segment audience.
  • Exceptional organizational skills with demonstrated ability to plan and execute long-term campaigns and initiatives; strong attention to details a must.
  • Excellent management skills; ability to mentor and provide guidance to direct reports; experience training and coaching staff on SM best practices.
  • Excellent writing skills, especially in translating long-form narrative into shorter, impactful pieces of storytelling. Spontaneity and creativity a must.
  • Experience working with diverse coalitions and partners on SM initiatives; Spanish fluency a plus.
  • Strong command of visual design and typography, including photo selection and photo-editing skills; adept at Adobe Creative Suite, especially Photoshop, Illustrator; experience with creating Facebook videos a plus.
  • Ability to work quickly and productively in a team and in an open work environment.
  • Thorough command of Microsoft Office products, including Excel and Powerpoint; familiarity with Prezi a plus.
