Recently, I had a client come to me wanting me to create a profile and a fan page based around the number of incidents involving competitiors "sticking" it to their brand on-line. Presently, this client is on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook fan page, and is within other communities. I advised the client against creating a page that would point toward some of his products issues or flaws. This would become a self destructive act. In short, I advised my client to address each issue as it appeared within the social web venues and examine his present business operations for flaws.

Many have clients who are like above. Part of me as a social media explorer wanted to experiment with the above idea...and see if it actually worked-Give your brand detractors a place to come, and confront them!

Would you encourage a client to create a social networking profile or page on the premise of getting back at your brand detractors?

Hi William,

Thanks for the value content here! You really get our social media noggins thinking!

Transparency is becoming a strong leadership skill that everyone wants. However, transparency doesn't work in all areas of a business. When I come to someone, I want to be assured that I'm investing in a solid product. For some reason, social media business users think it's okay to be transparent with their products. I say leave the flaws for your critiques to point out. As for that business owner, he/she must go back to the drawing board and re-think the product. However, in the meanwhile, social media is to be for honest, good marketing of your 'good' product. If your product is that bad that you want to share its flaws, don't be that well-marketed lie and pretend that product is worth selling. Be honest 100% of the way but do it in a tactical way!

I'm beginning to take on social media for the small-business owners. All this talk about SM, branding, and marketing has really got me thinking!

Thanks for bringing the best conversations out of us Will,
Sana
William,

I think if (s)he is creating a page to address largely inaccurate or disinformation about a product, then that is good. Get ahead of the news type of thing. If this is to nick-pick every little thing, then (s)he just looks as if they sell junk, IMO.
Thanks for the input.

We were dealing with lots of disinformation. I like to get ahead of this type of situation....Better to create a place where we can address these issues and send on-line participants to interact with them!
